Pro-Palestinian Protesters at Princeton Attempt Sit-In at Clio Hall

Pro-Palestinian protesters tried to stage a sit-in at Clio Hall Monday night, and at least two were put onto a bus by police. Dozens of others blocked the front and back doors and said they would not leave until charges were dropped and the University agreed to negotiate their demands. Protesters entered the building at around 5:15 p.m. and the last of them were released by Public Safety officers just before 8 p.m. The crowd dispersed toward Cannon Green, where organizers started to move blankets and supplies from their camp in McCosh Courtyard. In all, 13 people were arrested and…

Princeton Grad Students Rally Around Unionization Campaign

More than half of all Princeton graduate students recently signed cards signaling their desire to form a union, and Princeton Graduate Students United (PGSU) organizers tell PAW a union election may happen as soon as this month. According to its website, PGSU’s platform has six key pillars: fair and effective cross-campus grievance procedures; improved support for international students; comprehensive, inclusive, and funded health care and child care; affordable housing guaranteed through graduation; guaranteed cost of living adjustments and contingency funding; and fair, clear, and safe work standards. Aditi Rao, a second-year classics student and a PGSU organizer, said it makes…

From Princeton to Premiership

Over beers at a watering hole in downtown Leeds, England, Jesse Marsch ’96 ponders a question that, truth be told, he probably would prefer not to answer. When Marsch took over as the head coach at Leeds United earlier this year, he became the second U.S.-born field boss of an English Premier League team — his college coach at Princeton, Bob Bradley ’80, was the first — and last summer Leeds spent $54 million to sign two young U.S. stars, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson. Never have so many Americans held such prominent roles on the same team in the…

Class Close-Up: Students in ‘Origami Engineering’ Connect Art and Science

The word origami likely conjures up thoughts of ancient Chinese or Japanese masters carefully folding paper for use in religious rituals or to create delicate art. Or maybe you think of a classroom full of small children making simple cranes or frogs. But Glaucio Paulino, a civil and environmental engineering professor, can list many of the complex and modern usages of this age-old concept: “Space exploration, airplanes, deployable systems, robotics, architecture, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, now automobiles [for example, energy-absorbing crash boxes].” “Origami is everywhere,” Paulino said. That includes Princeton, with the addition of Paulino’s course, “Origami Engineering,” which is…

Princeton Says Farewell to Pete Carril at Memorial Service

Chris Thomforde ’69, a star center for Princeton men’s basketball who later became an ordained minister and the president of three colleges, delivered the opening prayer at a Sept. 30 campus memorial service for his former coach, Pete Carril. He noted, among other things, that “no one’s life can be comprehended by one story, however well told.” Then, after the amen, Thomforde offered the first of many well-told stories. Thomforde’s last conversation with Carril was in July, when he called to wish the coach a happy birthday. He received a refreshing dose of praise for his work ethic as a…
