WILLIAM G. BOWEN *58, who served as University president from 1972 to 1988, died Oct. 20 at his Princeton home at the age of 83. His death was reported as this issue of PAW was going to press; see PAW’s website and our next issue for full coverage. Share your recollections of Bowen at paw@princeton.edu.

GRADUATE STUDENTS voted Oct. 18 to affiliate Princeton Graduate Students United (PGSU), a group working to unionize grad students on campus, with the American Federation of Teachers. The vote was 124 for the AFT, 16 for the Service Employees International Union, and 22 abstentions. David Walsh, a third-year student in the history department and a PGSU representative, said the group plans to continue reaching out to grad students about the impact union representation would have.

Affiliation with a labor union is a preliminary step toward a possible unionization vote, which requires signed authorization cards from at least 30 percent of the potential bargaining-unit members.
