I appreciate PAW’s presentation of a thoughtful article on the challenges faced by Jewish members of the University community in the wake of the horrific attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. These challenges are felt not only on campus, but wherever Jewish people live in the nation and the world. I am not sure however that a challah with a reference to the twists of its braids is an appropriate image for this story. Nor do I understand the University’s position on this subject. It did reject the ridiculous petition to divest from companies with ties to Israel, but at the same time it offered GSS 245, a strange course titled “Gender, Reproduction, and Genocide” with a description beginning, “This seminar explores genocide through the analytic of gender, with a central focus on the ongoing genocide in Gaza.” This is offensive on many levels.
