My Princeton mentor, Robert R. Palmer of the history department, taught me that as a result of the American Revolution, the true conservatives left for Canada, Britain, the Caribbean or were simply silenced forcibly by the rebels. George Will doesn't seem to realize therefore that we had no real conservatives in America. In France they emigrated during its Revolution, but came back to be a strong force for reaction and conservatism right up to the end of WWII and beyond. In America they were gone for good.
