Four-Minute Milers in the Ivy League

Bill Burke was not the first Ivy Leaguer to break four minutes in the mile. I’m not sure who is, but Denis Fikes ran 3:55 as Penn senior in an exciting race against Tony Waldrop of UNC at the Penn Relays.

Editor’s note: Fikes and Penn teammate Karl Thornton both broke the 4:00 barrier in 1974. Burke was the first Princetonian to break the four-minute mark in college. The comment above has been corrected.
