I worked with Peter Dougherty back in the Pleistocene Era, also known as the 1970s, in the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich college textbook department; he was a college traveler and I wrote advertising copy. He was great guy then and he's a great guy now. I work in trade publishing as an editor, but I watch the activity of the better university presses pretty closely, and it is as clear as can be that Princeton University Press under Peter's leadership has become the premier u press in the country, beautifully balancing the twin (and sometimes contradictory) imperatives of scholarship and commerce. What is less well known is Peter's unequaled knowledge of the history of Philadelphia soul, jazz and R&B music; Princeton should endow chair for him. or at least sponsor a series of lectures, which PUP would of course publish!
