An independent thinker

What a delight and inspiration to read “Do-it-yourself scholars” by Merrell Noden, with its focus on the spirited life and work of Jeff Perry ’68 — my onetime roommate — and Jeff’s new career as a biographer of the nearly forgotten African American public intellectual and activist, Hubert Harrison. Jeff was always an independent thinker, willing and eager to test all forms of orthodoxy, which at the time (freshman and sophomore years especially) often centered on such late-night dorm topics as the nature of sin and morality as we confronted the leading edge of the tumultuous late ’60s. Keep up the great work, Jeff, and now I have a new book to read!
