As we remember what happened in what became New Mexico much later in a territory ruled by Spain, let us not forget that in much of Latin America, especially nearby in the country of Mexico, the successors of the Spanish arrivals are still lording it over the descendants of the Native peoples we call Indians. Mexico today is a failed nation -- not even a nation, more a criminal conspiracy -- between those of European origin and the drug cartels. The victims are still the same Native peoples who have always been the victims. The media focuses naturally on the crimes of the cartels and the silent support of the elites who permit these crimes but never on the ethnic causes of poverty, crime, oppression, and sadism in the ruling classes of the former Spanish empire.
