Populism or Demagoguery?

In the current Phi Beta Kappa quarterly, emeritus professor of classics at Princeton Robert Connor notes that populist is a fairly recent term for dangerous democrats. The word that used to be used was DEMAGOGUE. Trump and his ilk think he is a populist, but he is actually a demagogue, as in ancient Athens during the war with Sparta. The closest modern examples would be Mussolini and Hitler. True, Trump is a lot less well read than either Mussolini or Hitler, but he has all their traits and appeals. He is then a moronic Fascist rather than a literate one.
