Prepare Students for Respectful Debate and Discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
President Eisgruber issued a commendable statement, condemning Hamas’ murder and kidnapping of Israelis while also acknowledging the pain felt by students and faculty on all sides and urging Princetonians from all backgrounds “to treat each other with grace and compassion.”
Going forward, the University may wish to include in its briefings for students a clear statement of guidelines regarding acceptable and unacceptable activities in the wake of recent events. The University might also consider assigning incoming students readings on the conflict selected by faculty experts and organizing discussions that provide an opportunity for students to voice their views respectfully while also hearing and learning from the views of others.
