Why Learn Foreign Languages?

Americans and Britons are the least likely to learn foreign languages. Could it be because English has become a worldwide language over the last half century or so? If you can count on foreigners knowing a good deal of English, depending of course on social class, occupation and other such factors, why bother learning their language?
