Princeton Could Engage Without Investing

Fossil fuel investments gave us little advantage over peers who did divest, so where’s the logic in reversing course and publicly embarrassing ourselves?

We impose an artificial standard by saying engagement with these companies needs to come with investment. We can recognize the need to work with bad actors while not financially implicating ourselves in their here-and-now destruction of our environment.

And Princo’s last divestment shows how quickly it can be done. There is no need to wait until 2046 — another contrivance, significant only as Princeton’s 300th birthday. Why not act now, with the knowledge we have?
