Rocking Out at the Battle of the Alumni Bands

Can’t pass up the opportunity for a shoutout to my friend and classmate Bill Webster. Since 2008, he has single-handedly talked the University into allowing (no small task to introduce a new Reunions event), promoted, and run a Friday gathering of former student bands from major reunion years. Billed as the Battle of the Alumni Bands, it’s not at all competitive. Some of the groups are a little rusty, some are as professional as any you’ll hear under the tents, but all give a great show and it’s become my favorite Reunions activity. Bill not only brings a full set of gear (amps, PA, drum kit, mikes), but a pro sound man and members of his own band from LA to fill in for missing members in older classes. All the University has to provide is the tent at the bottom of the Blair Arch steps. My favorite this year was a 2011 cover band charmingly calling themselves the Plagiarists who knocked it out of the park. Runs all day Friday starting at 10 or 10:30 a.m., kicked off by a set from the University Rock Ensemble. Highly recommended. If you’ve never come by for a listen, check it out next year.

PS - Special thanks to Robert Neubecker for including two lefties in his illustration. Sir Paul and I both appreciate it.
