It is honestly even hard to understand and to know how to react to this walk back on fossil fuel divestment by Princeton. The northern summer in 2026 has shattered temperature records, claimed dozens of thousands of lives and caused severe damage to the economy, to crops and to water and energy supplies, already making life harder for everyone. I am currently based in Germany, and even here I have experienced shocking levels of heat that I have never experienced before — and I originally come from Brazil. How can Princeton, a world-class leader in science and education, go back to partnering with the companies who have caused this state of affairs, right when people the world over can feel quite literally the effects of this in their abilities to survive? If Princeton wants to lead on climate progress and not be a source of shame to its community, it must do what science has known for several decades now to be what really works: support immediate transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. This cannot be done by investing in fossil fuel companies nor taking their research money. We know what to do to fix this, and Princeton is doing the opposite. Shameful.
