Arthur B. Monroe ’62

Body

Arthur died Nov. 10, 2024. He suffered from Parkinson’s disease for several years.

He came to Princeton from Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Arthur was one of our fun-loving classmates whose heart never left the Deep South. He matriculated with our class through bicker 1960, joining Cottage Club, and then abruptly left. Sophomore year he roomed with John Mendelson, Scott Brooks, Gardiner Dodd and other classmates in Hamilton Hall.

While Arthur’s father, Malcolm L. Monroe ’32, was a lawyer/investor in New Orleans, Arthur’s priorities did not include a Northern education. He graduated from Tulane in 1963, earned a law degree there in 1966, and eventually lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he met his wife, Marcia.

They moved to New York City, where he was an investor while Marcia established and ran a very elegant yoga/exercise studio in Greenwich Village. “Carioca Archie” spoke over VOIP with Joe Caltagirone, another Rio habitue.

Later the couple summered in Amherst and spent winters in Rio. Our last contact with Arthur was in the New Orleans area. His widow, Gloria Marcia Pahlares Monroe, died in New York City March 11, 2025. We are sad to lose these friends.
