“David and Goliath” is how PAW editors described this photo of Charles “Chuck” Carpenter ’21 and W.A. “Tiny” Karl that appeared in the April 7, 1920, issue. Karl was Princeton’s head wrestling coach at that time, and Carpenter was captain-elect of the varsity team. When Joe “Gus” Schoenlein later joined the coaching staff, he arranged for Carpenter to wrestle world heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis in a special match at New York’s Commodore Hotel in April 1921. Lewis failed to throw Carpenter within 20 minutes — the terms of the match — so Carpenter scored a technical victory. That was big news on campus, according to his son, Douglas Carpenter ’55, who supplied the photo.
