Former University photographer Robert P. Matthews captured the somber expressions of these unidentified marchers — and the excitement of the boy with them — as they crossed campus Nov. 1, 1982, on the occasion of Black Solidarity Day. Highlights of that event included opening services led by the Rev. Samuel Proctor, pastor of the influential Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem; an address by Coretta Scott King that drew more than 500 people to Cannon Green; and an evening speech by WABC-TV reporter Gil Noble in the Third World Center (now the Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding). Do any PAW readers recognize the participants pictured?
