Cassandra James ’23 Recommends Romantasy Novels

Cassandra James ’23 graduated from Princeton with a book deal for Capitana, a romantasy novel — that’s romance-plus-fantasy in publishing — she wrote during her junior year. Set at a fictional academy for pirate hunters, Capitana follows aspiring hunter Ximena Reale as she competes against her rival Dante de León to capture a legendary pirate and redeem her own family’s traitorous past. The novel is inspired by Hispanic history and James’ own Latina heritage as a Colombian American, and it explores themes of family, justice, and redemption. With Capitana about to be released Feb. 4, PAW asked James to recommend three more young adult romantasy novels, and she chose these.
