“Quaker Oats Mao,” a 1987 work by Chinese-American artist Zhang Hongtu, is one of more than 50 works in the exhibit “Outside In: Chinese x American x Contemporary Art,” on view at the Princeton University Art Museum from March 7 through June 7. The exhibit examines what is considered “contemporary” art, “Chinese” art, and “American” art in an age of globalization. The six artists in the exhibit, including Arnold Chang, Michael Cherney, Zhi Lin, Liu Dan, and Vannessa Tran, are American citizens; some are immigrants, others were born in the United States. Their works include paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and installations, and are diverse in style and subject matter.
