Los Arkansans Misterioso

The music on this Portland band’s third self-released album is hard to categorize, says lead vocalist Richard Bruno ’02. “We’ve been called ‘indie ethnic pop’ due to instruments from around the world, and ‘country and eastern,’ due to the Americana meets eastern instruments vibe,” says Bruno, who also plays bass and guitar. Fletcher Foti ’01 and James Mayer play guitar and other instruments. All three band members are Arkansas natives. Bruno’s research at Oregon Health and Science University in brain imaging and sleep states has contributed to the content and composition of their songs. “Following in the footsteps of McCartney’s ‘Yesterday,’” explains Bruno, “I've attempted to extract melodies from dreams and work them up into full-blown pop songs.” Go to  http://www.myspace.com/thesubcons to listen to tracks.
