William W. Graessley, professor of chemical engineering emeritus, died Feb. 18. He was 83. Graessley was a faculty member from 1987 until 1998, when he became an adjunct professor at Northwestern. He published extensively on radiation cross-linking of polymers and the thermodynamics of polymer blends. His awards include the High Polymer Physics Prize.
He was also a very open-minded scientist. I submitted a paper to The Journal of the Society of Rheology back around 1974. In it I showed that an equation he proposed did not correctly describe polymer behavior. He overruled one of his own editors, said my approach was correct and accepted the paper for publication. (I corrected my misspelling of his name when I made the final revisions.)
