Entering the 2011 NCAA Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma, Calif., the Princeton women had hopes of contending for their first team title, but after being edged out of the grand finals in two events, the Tigers had just one remaining shot at gold, in the first varsity eight -- the marquee event in women’s collegiate rowing.
Princeton led start to finish, winning its first national title since 2006 and capping an undefeated season. As Emily Reynolds ’11 told PAW contributor Melody Gutierrez, “We knew we had potential to be really fast, but you don’t know until it’s over. Winning the national championship takes a lot and you don’t know if you have it until you cross the finish line.”
