Goheen’s Example of Living Leadership

I was fortunate to be elected class president during President Goheen’s last year as president of the University. He immediately congratulated me on my election, which surprised me given the relative insignificance of the office. I met with him and was impressed by how gracious he was. We spoke multiple times in the ensuing years during my time as an undergraduate when I served on the Council of the Princeton University Community and its Executive Committee, the University budget-setting Priorities Committee, and as chair of the Honor Committee. I also saw him frequently when I served as a trustee and always found him thoughtful, caring, informative, and helpful. I always enjoyed the opportunities to sit next to him and Margaret at dinners and other events. He showed me what “living leadership” was and set an example for me without telling me what to do. I knew I was fortunate to have known him and think it would be wonderful if the University honored him by naming the School of Public and International Affairs after him.
