My last Latin class was 75 years ago in high school. Nevertheless, the wording of Princeton’s motto has always troubled me. Shouldn’t it be “Viget sub numine dei” and not “Dei sub numine viget”? I gather that our ancestors wanted to put God first, but at the cost of good grammar at an educational institution.
