There is no apparent awareness here of the problem of research vs. teaching. In many schools, research takes precedence over teaching, and teaching is left to those in a second-class situation. In others, teaching is prized more, but the value of research as something to teach students about is lacking. The best university professors I have had were excellent researchers in their fields and very impressively able to make their research teachable -- but I must admit how rare that was. Everyone says the combination is valuable and indispensable, but few do both well.
Our esteemed Tommy Wilson (esteemed, however, not by everyone) had to attend Johns Hopkins for his graduate work.
