Yes to More Practitioners, Keep International Studies
I agree with the recommendation to employ more practitioners on the faculty. SPIA’s asset is also a weakness: the multidisciplinary approach bringing together some of the best academics on campus. And while many of these academics have real policy experience in government, theory predominates. Interestingly, current Kennedy School students told me they wished they had more theory. I believe SPIA is trying to get in balance.
Regarding international students and studies, I disagree with changing the focus to mostly a domestic one. Some of my best friendships and learning experiences in 1983 came from international classmates and courses. It has served me well since.
