Charles Langdon Stout ’53

Charlie, who arrived from Baltimore with the sizable Gilman contingent and who, it is believed, later became the youngest partner of a New York Stock Exchange firm, died Dec. 30, 2009, of a heart condition in Towson, Md.

Freshman year he roomed with Baltimorean Bo Willis and performed well in lacrosse and wrestling, fellow grappler Pierce Lonergan recalls. As a sophomore he again lived with Willis, as well as Cy Horine, K.C. Miller ’52, and Don Hahn ’51 — all outstanding lax men from Baltimore. Junior year his roommates were Willis and George Shriver ’54, another good Baltimore lacrosse player who remembers Charlie, a geology major, spending countless hours in Guyot Hall working on projects. Senior year Willis and Steve Champion ’54 roomed with him. Charlie and everyone mentioned here had similar athletic and/or social interests and belonged to Ivy Club. He sang in the Glee Club and was a member of the Skeet Club.  

As an investment banker he excelled with Robert Garrett & Sons, which merged with Alex Brown & Sons. His brother, Merrell L. Jr., recollects his loyalty to Gilman and his lifelong fondness for hunting and fishing. Among those holding him in love and respect besides Merrell are his devoted wife, Peggy; nieces Barry Kaminer and Anne Hughes; and nephew Merrell L. III.
