Harley Rankin Jr. ’61

Toby died Dec. 29, 2025, from Parkinson’s disease and dementia at Sage Living in Jackson, Wyo., where he and Lucy had lived since 2000.
Born in Philadelphia, he came to us from the Episcopal Academy. At Princeton, he majored in history, took his meals at Cottage, and worked on the Campus Fund Drive. He roomed with George Barker, Tal Mack, Tom Garrett, Ed Brown, Bill H. Miller, Dick Butt, Paul Sanger, and Scott Driscoll.
After service as an officer in the Navy, he earned an MBA at Harvard before embarking on a long career in the canning industry, first with Continental Can and then with Silgan Holdings as a co-founder, where he served as EVP and CFO. He was on the 41st floor of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, during the terrorist attack.
Retiring in 2002, he and Lucy moved to Jackson Hole to embrace the active outdoor lifestyle and to be closer to their children. Toby is survived by his wife Lucy; children Chris, Todd, and Susie; and six grandchildren.
