Alan Crawford Jr. ’48

Alan died at home Aug. 23, 2014, in Devon, Pa., at age 88.

Before retiring in 1986, his career in banking and investment was at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in Philadelphia, where he rose from sales to senior-executive assignments. He joined the firm in 1957 and was made a partner in 1974. Prior to that, he worked at Stroud & Co., an investment company in Philadelphia.

He and his wife, Barbara, a prominent Bryn Mawr alumna, were active together in many volunteer and philanthropic activities — especially ornithological, environmental, and educational organizations. A skilled fly-fisherman and ornithologist, he traveled with his wife all over the world for fishing and bird watching. Alan mentioned in our 25th reunion book that “... together we have netted more trout than most people are privileged to see in a lifetime.”

He and Barbara were married for 61 years. She survives him, as do their son, Alan III; their daughters, Elizabeth ’79, Barbara, and Susan; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter. Other Princeton graduates in the extended family include Alan’s father, grandfather, father-in-law, and three uncles.
