Al died Sept. 24, 2021, at home in Pueblo, Colo.

He prepared at Denver East High School. At Princeton he majored in chemistry and joined Charter Club. During his senior year he accompanied Albert Einstein several evenings a week to the Observatory on campus.

Al earned a medical degree at the University of Colorado with the support of the U.S. Air Force in exchange for a period of service. Al was stationed in Hawaii, Texas, Alaska, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Al married Cathryn “Cay” Crites during his orthopedic surgery residency in Texas.

While serving as chief of orthopedics at Andrews Air Force Base Hospital in Washington, D.C., he was on the teaching faculty of George Washington University. He received several Commendation Medals and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of service.

Al then practiced in private orthopedic surgery in Pueblo for 31 years. Retiring in 2000, he discovered a talent and passion for plein-air watercolor painting. He and Cay traveled and painted all over the world and left an extensive collection of watercolor paintings. He also served as a substitute teacher for grades K-12.

Al spent time on Grand Lake in the Colorado mountains from childhood until recent years.

Alan is survived by Cay, his wife of 60 years; children Howie, Tom, Dan, and Susie; and three granddaughters.
