Body

ALAN SMITH, M.D., died Jan. 14, 1994, at the age of 80. After preparing at the Hill School, he majored in biology at Princeton, and was a member of Quadrangle Club. He graduated in 1940 from Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons.

During WWII, he spent four years in the army medical corps, attached to the First Armored Division as a captain. He served in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Italy, and received the bronze star.

For several years, he was attending physician in the department of medicine at the Hospital Center in Orange, N.J. He also served as V.P. of the medical staff and was a former president of the Clinical Society of the Oranges. A longtime resident of East and West Orange, N.J., he retired to Irvington, Va., some years ago. His hobbies included growing orchids, photography, wood carving, and working on precious stones.

Al's wife, Emilie, died tragically in an automobile accident in Sept. 1993. He is survived by a son, Alan Bruce; a daughter, Laurie Garand; and two grandchildren. Al was a devoted Princetonian who will be missed by the class. We offer our sincere sympathy to his family.
