Alan Magary ’33

Body

AL MAGARY died Jan. 20, 1990, in Woodbury, Conn. A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church of Woodbury on Jan. 26.

Al was born July 21, 1911 in South Orange, N.J., and lived in Detroit when he entered Princeton. He prepared at Mercersburg. In college Al played lacrosse, was a member of Cloister Inn and roomed with Jim Evans.

After college Al went with the Elgin National Watch Co. in Elgin, Ill. Except for service with the War Production Board and as a captain in the Marines during WWII, he remained with Elgin until 1952. At that time he joined Seth Thomas as head of the watch division. He subsequently became general sales manager.

In 1961, Al and his wife Joan founded Candide Yarns, an outgrowth of a business Joan had started when she was in college. They finally sold the business in 1988 and retired to a newly built house in Woodbury, Conn.

Al married Joan Gleason on Feb. 8, 1958. She survives him. He is also survived by two sons from a previous marriage, Alan B. Magary and Douglas K. Magary; and by two stepsons, R. Davis Weigand and Peter W. Weigand; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Benson and Louise Magary; and seven grandchildren.

As a very popular member of the Class of '33, Al will be greatly missed. The Class extends its deep sympathy to his family.
