Alan White Carrick ’23

Body

THE CLASS OF 1923 lost, on May 2, 1992, our classmate who over all his 69 graduate years lived a life of public service, while establishing a successful career with the law department of the Prudential Life Insurance Company.

Alan was born in Jersey City, NJ., Mar. 18, 1902. He received his A.B. degree with our history department and a law degree at Columbia. On Feb. 21, 1939, at Summit, N.J., Elizabeth Bates became his bride. The Carricks then moved to 260 Prospect Ave., and in Alan's own words, lived "a pleasant, settled life in a stimulating community in the same house for 40 years." Alan served the Borough of Princeton over the years as a member of the planning board. He established the local Shade Tree Commission, on which he served for ten years, after leaving the borough's government. He was successful in his efforts to keep Princeton a charming college town. Their only son, Robert D. Carrick, lives in Ouray, Colo., with Alan's two grandsons, The Class of 1923 extends sincere sympathy to them; his widow, Betsey; his sister Gertrude C. Corder; and a brother Ashley B. Carrick '32. Alan's few remaining classmates also share their pride in a great man who died after having lived a great life of 90 years.
