Albert D. Burlen ’49

Al died Aug. 16, 2010, after a struggle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.  

He grew up in Boston and New York City, attended the Peddie School, and graduated from Friends Seminary in New York in 1944. After finishing high school, Al volunteered for the Army Air Force.

Al joined our class after his discharge. He was a member of Key and Seal, one of the first students enrolled in the humanities program, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After Princeton, Al joined Union Carbide Corp. as an advertising executive. He continued working for Union Carbide in New York and Connecticut until his retirement in 1986.  

In 1952, Al married Georgia Risk. In 1998 they moved to Edgewater Pointe Retirement Community in Boca Raton, Fla., where he became admired for his wonderful singing voice.

In addition to his love of his family, Al is remembered for his enthusiasm in pursuing his many interests, including a lifelong devotion to the Boston Red Sox and the music of Frank Sinatra. He was an avid student of military history and enjoyed collecting military books and memorabilia.

Al is survived by Georgia and their two children, Katharine and Bruce ’79. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.
