Alexander Avidan ’23

Body

WE LOST OUR CLASSMATE Apr. 14, 1993. Alex was born in Newark, N.J., Oct. 27, 1901. He prepared for Princeton at South Side H.S., where he was a member of the debating team.

At college, he continued his interest in debating, becoming a member of the triangular debating team and taking part in PrincetonOxford debates. Alex was also a member of the executive committee of the Speakers Assn. and was active in Whig Hall.

After earning his law degree in 1926 at Harvard, he established his law office with Goldberg and Seligsohn in his hometown, Newark. He married Ethel Hamburger and gained a stepdaughter.

The Avidans eventually settled at South Ocean Blvd. in Highland Beach, Fla. where they pursued their hobbies, golf and bridge among them. They were fond of travel, and one of their most memorable trips took place during the winter of 1968, when Ethel and Alex took a cruise, with a short stay at Kingston, Jamaica. There they visited with classmate and new ambassador Walter Sobriner.

Services for our special classmate were held at the Beth Israel Memorial Chapel. With Ethel, we share the loss for a great man, who lived a full life.
