Alexander G. McKay, professor emeritus of classics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, died Aug. 31, 2007. He was 82.

McKay received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto in 1946, a master’s degree from Yale in 1947, and a Ph.D. in classics from Princeton in 1950. He joined McMaster in 1957, and was classics department chair from 1962 to 1968 and again from 1976 to 1977. From 1968 to 1973, he was the founding dean of the faculty of humanities.

After retiring in 1990, he received an honorary doctorate from McMaster in 1992. He was also very active in the music and art worlds of Hamilton, Ontario, serving on several boards as president or director.

McKay is survived by Helen, his wife of 42 years, and two stepchildren.
