Alfred S. Mehl ’40

“Sherm,” of Hershey’s Mill and Freedom Village, Pa., died March 18, 2011.

He prepared at Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia. At Princeton, he majored in electrical engineering. He also attended Temple University.

He was a full-time member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and a veteran of World War II. His last assignment in 1964 was as missile battalion commander in the Army Air Defense Command with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

In 1963, he joined F.W. Rungir Associates, a consulting and corrosion engineering firm, followed by a long career at Henkels & McCoy. He also taught engineering courses at various colleges and universities.

Sherm belonged to the Philadelphia Skating Club, Humane Society, and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. He was past president of the Valley Forge Home Civic Association.

His interests included swimming, camping, gardening, and travel.  

Predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Leinroth, he is survived by his wife, Deborah McKnight Mehl; sons Sherman and Theodore; daughter Barbara Small; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Sherm’s classmates extend sincere sympathies to them all.
