AEEEN NEWELL *50, a professor at Carnegie Mellon Univ. in Pittsburgh, died July 19, 1992, at age 65 . He was one of the four pioneers in the Field of artificial intelligence. Dr. Newell was born Mar. 19, 1927, in Sail Francisco. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Navy for a period of two years. In 1947 he married Noel McKenna, while he was an undergraduate at Stanford. He received the B.S. degree in physics from that institution in 1949 and came to Princeton. In 1950 he joined the RAND Corp. oil a special project for the Air Force, studying human reactions. His doctorate was conferred by CarnegieMellon in 1957, in the field of industrial administration. In 1961 lie joined the faculty it CarnegieMellon, where lie participated in the creation if the School of Computer Science. He is the author often books and more than 200 scholarly articles devoted to the study of human thinking processes. He was the founding president of the American Assai. for Artificial Intelligence and also presided over the Cognitive Science Society. In June 1992 he was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Bush. We extend sympathy to his widow, Noel; his son, Paul; and his sister Ann.
