Allen was a real-life “Mr. Chips.” From 1950 to 1997, he taught history and coached many champion baseball, football, and basketball teams, mostly at Loomis Chaffee School.

Born March 11, 1927, in Lewes, Del., he graduated from The Hill School and was an Army enlistee from 1944 to 1946, serving first in preparations for the invasion of Japan, and later in the occupation of Germany.

Allen graduated from Princeton in 1951. He was a star baseball pitcher, and like our late classmate Rudy Clemen, he struck out George H.W. Bush in a Princeton-Yale game. Allen then earned a master’s degree at Trinity College. He also starred in a Delmarva semi-pro baseball league before beginning his lifelong teaching and coaching career.

Allen died Jan. 7, 2017, in Windsor, Conn., at age 89. He is survived by his former wife and friend, Barbara; children Susan, Will, and Seth and their spouses; and two grandchildren.
