ALLY DIED in Ligonier, Penn., Nov. 28, 1992, after a long illness. He prepared at Shady Side Academy.

He started in 1925 with Pittsburgh Steel Co, in its sales training course, and rapidly moved up in its management to become president in 1956. He was responsible for the 1968 merger of Pittsburgh Steel and Wheeling Steel. At that time, he was serving in the dual role of president of Pittsburgh and chairman of Wheeling. In 1973, he retired as chairman of the merged companies.

He had been a director of Joy Manufacturing Company, Dravo Corp., and the Pittsburgh National Bank. He was a V.P. and member of the executive committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The College of Steubenville (Ohio) awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science to Ally.

He served three years, during WWII, in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1945 as a lieutenant commander.

For many years, Ally held leadership roles in his community, including the former Magee Hospital, the Hospital Planning Assn. of Allegheny County, the Pittsburgh Regional Planning Assn., the Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the United Fund of Allegheny County.

Ally's first wife, and mother of his four children, Jane Spaulding Maxwell, predeceased him. He is survived by his widow, Margaret Taylor Maxwell; sons Allison R. 111, David S., and John E.; daughter Elizabeth M. Sturges; and five grandchildren.

Ally was one of our most prominent classmates and will indeed be remembered.
