Andrew M. Campbell ’37

Body

FRIENDLY, loyal Princetonian and surgeon Andy Campbell died on Oct. 30, 1989, of prostate cancer. At Polytech, he was on the football, swimming, and track teams, performed in the orchestra and the band, and was a class officer. He continued with track and the orchestra at Princeton, where he majored in biology and graduated with second-group honors. He roomed with Andy Duany, who named his first son after him, and was a member of the nefarious Nassau Inn sign team.

Andy's career as a surgeon began at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He interned at Misericordia Hospital and served his residency in surgery at New York Post Graduate Hospital. By 1946, he had a private office and was on the staffs of University Hospital, Columbus Hospital, St. Francis Hospital (later Gouverneur), New York Infirmary, and Southampton Hospital. This 18-year phase of his career ended when he had to have surgery on his back. During the next 20 years, he fought off colon cancer (in 1973) and was medical director of Kennedy Airport for American Airlines. He retired in 1980, and moved to Hampton Bays, L.I.

Andy married Catherine McMahon in 1952. They produced son John and daughter Nadine (Mrs. Nathaniel Roe), who has a boy and a girl. Andy, John, Nadine, Nat, and grandson Daniel (then age two) all attended our 50th reunion. We send our condolences to the family on the loss of this capable and courageous man.
