Andrew Mitchell Underhill Jr. ’44

Body

ANDY, DEVOTED MEMBER of the Class and the university, died Aug. 29, 1992. After years of ill health, his gallant old heart failed finally, giving him the peace so elusive in life. He joined us from Lawrenceville, majored in English, was active in Theatre Intime and the Sailing Club and left as a junior Phi Beta Kappa to serve in New Caledonia as a staff sergeant in the Transportation Corps. He graduated in 1946 and worked for Grey advertising in NY,C., then briefly with Brookhaven Labs, before joining and eventually ending his business career with his father's firm, PioneerMoss, Inc,, in the city. Andy was a successful competitive sailor, racing Star boats around Long Island and as distant as Cuba. In Winter he raced "Scooter" ice boats on the lakes of New Jersey and New York. For years he served as a boating correspondent for YACTITINC. A devoted music lover he became an enthusiastic collector of music of all sorts, amassing a collection of over 12,000 recordings now willed as a gift to Princeton's Dept. of Music, in memory of John Miner '44, his music mentor. In his later years Andy found solace in the teachings of Zen Buddism. He never married, he is survived by his sister Nancy, her husband, John P. Meade '39, and many Princeton relations. To them and all who loved him, go our deepest sympathies. Sweet rest, Andy.
