Anouch Chahnazarian *86

Body

ANOUCH CHAHNAZARIAN DIED Dec. 26, 1993, in Brussels. She was 40. A native of Belgium, she got her bachelor's from the Free Univ. of Brussels, her master's from the Catholic Univ. of Louvain, and her Ph.D. from Princeton in demography.

Partly of Armenian extraction, she was truly a citizen of the world. She spent some of her childhood in Africa and traveled extensively in Haiti, Zaire, and Senegal to collect data. At the time of her death, she was on leave from her faculty position at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health to do research as a demographer for the population observatory in Njakhar, Senegal. Dr. Chahnazarian's main scholarly interests were child mortality in less developed nations and the impact of primary health care on child health.

Her untimely death from cancer is a sad loss to her profession, friends, and family. She is survived by her mother, Lucie; brother Pierre; and sister Catherine, to whom we extend sympathy.
