The son of Anthony M. Carey Jr. 1922, he came to Princeton from the Gilman School on a regional scholarship. He majored in history and won numerals and/or letters in freshman wrestling, 150-pound football, and lacrosse. He took his meals at Ivy Club and participated in Whig-Clio and the Pre-Law Society. Senior year he roomed with Randy Carroll, Eb Faber, Stan Emery, Bill Verner, Herb Wilgis, and Cary Woodward.

After graduation Tony served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of captain. He then graduated with a LL.B. from Harvard Law School and joined a Baltimore law firm, Venable, Baetjer & Howard, where he became a partner, specializing in energy and environmental law. In 1967, he married Eleanor Mackey, a Wellesley graduate, who became Maryland’s deputy attorney general.

Tony left his law firm to serve in government in Maryland, where he helped to write a code of ethics for government officials. He also helped to manage his wife’s political campaigns. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ellie; and two sisters.
