Archer Winsten ’26

Body

Archer Winsten, an outstanding reviewer of movies for the New York Post for over 50 years, died Feb. 21, 1997, at the home of his daughter in Moreau, N.Y. He was 92. With Richard Watts Jr., longtime theatre critic, he was credited with giving the Post the lead in play and movie reviews.

Archer came to Princeton from the University School in Cleveland and Augusta Military Academy, where he played football and ran track. At Princeton, Archer was a member of Cloister Inn and assistant editor of the Nassau Literary Magazine.

Success did not come easily or immediately after Princeton for Archer. A publisher for a first novel was never found, and a job with the NY Post as a reporter seemed to have no future. Then the editor at the Post offered Archer a place as reviewer of movies, and it was a ten-strike for Archer during the next 50 years.

Archer was a loyal member of the class and we regret that we did not see more of him.

He is survived by two daughters, Martha and Kay Howe, by a son, Steven, and by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. To all of them, we extend our sincere sympathy.
