A. Arnold Wettstein ’49

Body

He prepared for Princeton at Stevens Hoboken Academy. At Princeton he majored in history and played intramural sports. He was a member of Key and Seal Club.

After graduation, Biff attended Union Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1951. He served as a Navy chaplain during the Korean War. He then attended McGill University, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy and religion in 1956. Biff accepted a position as assistant dean of the chapel and assistant professor at Rollins College. In 1972 he became dean and retained that position until his retirement in 1991. He also was a professor in the religion department.

Biff’s 1988 essay, “Cults, Religion, and Constitutionality,” was the American Studies Essay of the Year. He enjoyed his work with his students and often led groups on mission trips to Africa and Central America. He continued his ministry in Vero Beach, Fla., after retirement.

Biff is survived by his wife, Marguerite; a daughter, Deborah Staton; sons Ted and Fritz; and six grandchildren. Our hearts go out to them at the loss of this fine gentleman.
