Arthur R. M. Hughes ’26
ARTHUR M. R. HUGHES, of Guilford, Conn., a banker, community leader, and yachtsman, died May 24, 1991. Arthur prepared for Princeton at the Salisbury School and left Princeton in 1924 to join Marine Midland Bank, where in 1950 he became president and chairman ofthe Marine Midland Bank of Rochester. His innovative leadership led the bank into successful adoption of computers and the issuance of its own credit card. During his years in Rochester, Arthur became a prominent civic leader, as well as a successful yachtsman. Arthur was president of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, and the Red Cross; a trustee of the Rochester Institute of Technology; and a founding member of the educational television station, Channel 21. He competed in his own boat, LADY LINDEN, five times in the Newport to Bermuda race, winning class 'C" in 1962. In 1968, he retired to Essex, Conn.
In 1926, Arthur married Sarah Livingston Jay of New York. In addition to his wife and brother, Stanley C., Arthur is survived by his eldest son, Arthur M. Hughes '50, a younger son, two daughters, 13 grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren. To all we send our sympathy and condolences.
