Bailey Cowan ’38
THE CLASS, the university, and the Princeton Club of London lost a great friend when Bailey Cowan died in England July 7, 1994. As an undergraduate, he was active in class affairs. He was our first class secretary, from 1938-40, and was our first reunion chairman. He spent five years in the Navy in anti-submarine service in Caribbean and European waters. He was discharged from the service as a lt. commander.
After ten years in advertising in the import field, Bristol Myers sent him to their London office as assistant managing director. In 1965, he formed his own marketing consultant firm for acquisitions and mergers. He ran the British end of the British-American Chamber of Commerce for many years. Meanwhile, he was busy revitalizing the Princeton Club of London into an important mecca for alumni visiting England, including our class's tennis tour in 1979 and several mini-reunions. He was our class secretaries' most faithful provider of news.
Nonetheless, his family took top priority, and sailing in Scottish waters was the locale for family vacations. He is survived by his Scottish bride, Margie Bergius; son Dickinson, named for their ancestor, John Dickinson, the first president of Princeton; daughters Sanda Belcher, Jennifer Helme and Sheila Gins; and brothers Robert and James. To his beloved family, we send our sincere condolences. Bailey will be greatly missed.
