Barton Harrison ’36

Body

BART DIED July 5, 1989 after a heart attack at his summer home in Biddeford Pool, Me. He was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Baltimore, Md.

He prepared at the Gilman School in Baltimore where he was active in dramatics and debating and was on the tennis team. At Princeton he majored in psychology. He was on the freshman tennis team and was a member of Dial Lodge. He attended Harvard Law School for a year before beginning his teaching career.

Bart retired in 1974 after 37 years of teaching English at the McDonogh School in McDonogh, Md. He lived on the McDonogh campus where his apartment served as a refuge from the rigors of what was, for much of his time there, a military school for boys. He loaned his students books and served as a father figure for many students over the years. He also taught horseback riding at the school and at Camp Red Cloud in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

He was a member of the Abenakee Club at Biddeford Pool, Me. Bart was an enthusiastic former Baltimore Colts football fan. He also enjoyed tennis and golf. He is survived by a son, Christopher W. Harrison.

Bart was a delightful person. He will be missed by those of us who knew him.
