Bass Hicks Lewis Jr. ’47

Body

Bass died in Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ga., on Feb. 1, 2000, after a long illness.

Bass graduated from Lawrenceville in June 1943 and came to Princeton that summer with a group of civilians who had not attained military age. He completed his freshman year, joined the Army, and served in a combat engineer battalion in France and Germany.

Returning to Princeton in 1946, he joined Tower Club, majored in the school of public and intl. affairs, and served as deputy commander of the Army ROTC Battalion in his senior year. Bass roomed with Alvin Owsley, John Drescher, Don Stauffer, and Richard A. Davis.

After graduating from Princeton in 1949, Bass attended and graduated from the U. of Virginia law school, after which he entered into the private practice of law in his hometown, Columbus, Ga., where he also immersed himself in community affairs.

He was a congenial companion, a courtly gentleman bemused by the incongruities of life and the perplexities of the human condition. He will be missed.

Bass did not leave any immediate family. The class extends its deep sympathy to his cousins.
